ZIKA VIRUS INFORMATION

Zika Virus

Zika fever is a mild febrile illness caused by a mosquito-borne virus similar to those that cause dengue and West Nile virus infection.

Zika virus has been linked to serious birth defects, including microcephaly, when contracted by expectant mothers during pregnancy. Microcephaly is a birth defect where a baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age. Babies with microcephaly often have smaller brains that might not have developed properly.

Zika virus has been identified in several countries in Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean since 2015. Outbreaks have previously been reported in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Local transmission has been reported in Puerto Rico and Florida. Cases of Zika fever have been reported in travelers returning to the United States.

Chief's Message

Chief Don De Lucca

I am proud to lead a team of professional law enforcement officers and civilian support staff. Our police department enjoys a strong relationship with the citizens of Doral and its business community. Our officers are encouraged to strengthen these relationships through their professionalism and dedication to the concept of Community Policing. It is within the framework of this relationship that all of our citizens enjoy greater personal safety and the quality of life that we all desire.

The police department desires to be more than a traditional agency. Our philosophy statement reflects this belief: “We are the Guardians: A shield forged by truth, valor, diversity, and reverence.” We believe in these principles and use them to guide us in our daily mission.

We invite you to join us in our efforts to keep Doral safe. We encourage you to be involved in your community. Together we can keep Doral a wonderful place to live, work, learn and play.

Car Theft

In the United States, a vehicle is stolen every 21 seconds. Stolen cars, vans, trucks, and motorcycles cost victims time and money — and increase everyone's insurance premiums. They're also used to commit other crimes.

Don't be a victim of this serious crime. Take action and follow these tips:

  • Never leave your car running or the keys in the ignition when you're away from it, even for "just a minute."
  • Always roll up the windows and lock the car, even if it's in front of your home.
  • Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked. Put them in the trunk or at least out of sight.
  • Park in busy, well-lighted area.
